Hello Wendy,
As I am sure you know already, Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) is a genetic problem that results in a lack of the enzyme(s) necessry to convert glycogen to glucose. Glycogen is how glucose is stored in your liver until your body needs glucose for energy. When your body cannot change the stored glycogen back into glucose, glycogen builds up and causes the liver to swell.
Most skin conditions, like eczema, are a symptom of an overstressed liver and can be improved by improving the liver's detoxification functions. In cases of GSD, the liver is already overly stressed with excess glycogen. The liver's other functions suffer as a result.
There are several types of GSD and all require constant monitoring and balancing of blood glucose levels. Alls GSDs are extremely serious conditions.
There are numerous organizations you can find with a general search of the Internet for the key words Glycogen Storage Disease. Most of these groups can provide the guidelines and help you need for your nephew's dietary modifications and monitoring of his blood.
Best of Health,
